Michael Urban selected as Fulbright Scholar

Michael UrbanDr. Michael A. Urban, assistant professor of Geography, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at Northeastern University in the People’s Republic of China during the 2006-2007 academic year, according to the United States Department of State and the William J. Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

While in China, Urban will teach courses on environmental ethics and environmental management. "Through my own research involving human-environment interactions, I have found that effective environmental management is as contingent on social and cultural issues as it is on the mechanics of the physical landscape," he states. "China brings a fascinating and complex culture and history to the enormous environmental challenges it faces. I really see this award not just as a chance to teach others, but to learn a great deal myself. It’s an incredible honor to have the opportunity to share and explore these issues with students in such a dynamic country."

Urban is one of approximately 800 U.S. Faculty and professionals who will travel abroad to some 150 countries for the 2006-2007 academic year through the Fulbright Scholar Program. Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program’s purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries.

Recipients of Fulbright Scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and because they have demonstrated extraordinary leadership potential in their fields.
