World-renowned cancer researcher to lecture at 2007 Arts and Science Week
In his lecture Yin, Yang and the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy of Cancer Hawthorne will trace the history of boron neutron capture therapy from its beginning through new approaches on treating common tumor types. A member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Hawthorne is a professor of radiology and director of MU’s International Institute of Nano and Molecular Medicine. To mark its centennial as the College of Arts and Science, the College will honor its five living former deans with Distinguished Service Awards. Recipients are Armon Yanders of Columbia, dean from 1969-1982; Richard Wallace of Columbia, interim dean from 1982-1983; Milton Glick of Reno, Nev., dean from 1983-1988; Larry Clark of Columbia, interim dean in 1988 and dean from 1989-1998; and Richard Schwartz of Columbia, dean from 1998-2006. Current Dean Michael J. O’Brien will present the awards February 16 at the A&S banquet in the Reynolds Alumni Center. The week of celebration will begin with a reception to recognize College and departmental scholarship winners, as well as honor the 2007 Chalk Award winners. The Purple Chalk Awards, first awarded in 1974, acknowledge the teaching excellence of faculty members. This year's recipients are Melissa Click, assistant professor, Communication;Yuri Latushkin, professor, Mathematics; and Ines Segert, assistant professor, Psychological Sciences. In 1986, the Arts and Science Student Council presented the first Blue Chalk Awards to recognize faculty who are outstanding advisors. This year’s recipients are Deborah Huelsbergen, associate professor, Art, and David Setzer, professor, Biological Sciences. The Green Chalk Awards, established in 1987, honor teaching assistants whose excellent work in the classroom benefits undergraduate students. Sabine El Khoury, teaching assistant in Mathematics, and John Simpson, teaching assistant in Chemistry, are this year’s recipients. Links:College of Arts and Science 02 07 << back to news |
